Tumblr and Word Press are both micro blogging platforms and social networking sites.
What is Tumblr and WordPress?
Tumblr allows you to post content in a short form blog and you can follow other people’s blogs as well. The main tool for a Tumblr user is the Dashboard. Which allows the user to be updated about the latest posts from the blogs that they follow? It is also the tool by which the user can upload anything for instance, images, quotes, posts, texts, videos or links to their blog- all that is needed is the click of a button.
You can like, comment or re-blog anything that appears on the dashboard. You can also set up a schedule of the time gaps when you want your posts to appear. A Tumblr user can link it to their Facebook and twitter accounts so whenever they post something it appears on their account. Word press is a programme by which anyone can build and maintain a website. Like Tumblr this is also a social networking and blogging platform.
Both the Tumblr and WordPress platforms have their set of advantages and disadvantages.
Tumblr:
- The first and most major difference between the two has to do with the hosting feature. The word “Tumblr” will always appear on your blog. In Tumblr you are not the owner of the content of your blogs and posts. Your posts are located on their server and the implication is that at any point in time they may remove your blog or posts if they feel that there has been any legal violations regarding terms and conditions of their policies.
- Tumblr is free, and obviously that is a big benefit, so it is great for some normal light hearted stuff!
- Tumblr scores on the factor of the ease of sharing and reach because it is as much a platform as a community. It is quite easy to build up an audience and have followers as a social network audience is ready to follow your posts.
WordPress:
WordPress can offer you some strong advantages which is not possible with Tumblr.
- Tumblr is too simple a tool for most advanced users and if you are looking for something more professional then WordPress is the thing for you.
- In WordPress you own your content and host the WordPress blog therefore there is no need to comply with the rules and policies of any company and nor can they suddenly censure your posts. You are the complete owner of your site.
- With WordPress you can choose to have your own domain name (so it eliminates the “Tumblr” on your URL). Therefore if you are looking for branding and positioning then this is the one that will fit the bill.
- WordPress can be customized totally to fit your specifications and needs.
- Word Press is quite cost effective and is the preferred choice for professional use.
